Food Hygiene Training in Foreign Languages

Seafish has available foreign language versions of two key food safety training programmes.

Introductory Food Hygiene in the Seafood Industry

This short (2h30m) taught course was developed to address food hygiene training in low risk operations such as fishmongering, seafood processing and fish catching.

The course is a joint award between Seafish and the Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland and should meet the requirements to train staff in many seafood businesses throughout the UK.

The course is available in six languages other than English, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Through a unique approach to providing in depth course notes, it is possible to deliver the course to a mixed group of speakers. In theory the course could be delivered to a group including all seven languages, but in practice the most we have been called on to deliver to comprised a group with three languages (English, Latvian, and Polish).

The course is delivered by an English speaking trainer (approved by Seafish) using a standard set of PowerPoint slides. The trainer’s delivery is supported by a trainee handbook which includes translations of the joining instructions, slides, trainers notes, general hygiene guide, and evaluation forms. The trainer is able to use Seafish’s food safety training DVD Strikeback with a translation of the script to support their delivery. The examination papers are also translated into each of the languages.

Our experience of using this approach has been very positive with a high success rate amongst seafood industry staff of all nationalities.

Level 2 Food Safety and Elementary Food Hygiene

Seafish’s highly successful open learning programme received a boost in 2006 with the publication of versions in Lithuanian, Polish and Portuguese.

The open learning module is a self study pack that leads to a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Food Safety certificate or a Royal Environmental Health Institute for Scotland Elementary Food Hygiene certificate through examination.

The open learning module can be studied at a pace and time to suit you and your staff and an approved examiner will arrange to deliver the examination at a mutually convenient time and place.

As the module is available in English, Lithuanian, Polish and Portuguese we are able to make the examination papers available in these languages as well.

For more information or to arrange to study the module follow the link to the Academy Food Safety page or contact your local Group Training Association.
